Ensuring Equity in Student Learning Outcomes Assessment: Meeting the Needs of Every Student

College enrollment has become increasingly diverse in terms of students’ race, ethnicity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, age, ability, etc. This trend is only expected to continue as the United States moves into a majority-minority nation by the year 2050. Conducting assessment in a manner that takes into consideration the various needs of different student populations is a responsibility of higher education.

As community colleges educate a more diverse and global student population, there is an increased need to ensure every student succeeds regardless of their differences. For assessment to meet the goal of improving student learning and authentically document what students know and can do, an equitably responsive approach to assessment is needed. Institutions must build a relationship between equity and assessment to address how assessment approaches can be inclusive of and for diverse learners.
