About the Presenter

Dr. Joanna Slaton is South Grand Prairie Early College High School's Chancellor. Dr. Slaton has been in education for almost three decades. She is thrilled to lead GPISD's newest initiative— South Grand Prairie Early College High School. Early College is a school within a school where students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to realize the dream of earning an Associate’s Degree while obtaining a high school diploma. Dr. Slaton says it's exciting to be a part of making college a reality for all! Dr. Slaton attended Texas A&M University and then graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1988 with a Bachelor’s in Education. She earned her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 1993, and in 2008, she received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. Slaton has been a school administrator for more than 10 years and has been with GPISD for five. In addition to her work as an administrator, she has taught high school and college English. She continues to pursue her love of teaching as an adjunct graduate professor in Educational Leadership at SFASU. Dr. Slaton has been married to her husband Roy for 30 years, and they have one daughter, Lauren, who is a graduate of Texas A&M University School of Law. Dr. Slaton also has another family member, her dachshund Maggie, who is 14 and does whatever she wants.
